The Book
This book answers the question "'What is Flanders?" It tells the dramatic history of a country at the cross-roads of Europe, which was often in the vanguard of political and constitutional development. Its artistic heritage, which includes Van Eyck and Rubens, James Ensor and Constant Permeke, the town hall of Louvain and the counts' castle in Ghent, is as rich as any in Europe. Yet Flanders is sometimes neglected and misunderstood. With the help of numerous original illustrations, maps showing the changing boundaries, a list of buildings and works of art, and tables of dramatis personae, this book describes the vivid course of Flemish history. The story explains much of the country's present situation, and the hopes and problems of its people.
